Year of The Blue, Two Suggestions

by Sandra Allen Lovelace @SandraALovelace #WallflowerWomen

There’s a crisis of respect for emergency personnel in this country. The evidence is all around us. Some say it’s the result of disrespectful behavior on the part of those who serve our communities. Others say there’s a rising tide of discontent among our citizens.

I just know there are countless men and women of honor who put their lives on the line for others every day. They deserve my gratitude whether it’s me or someone I know or not whose need they meet or life they save. And that’s what I’m about.

Humans seem to find it easier to complain than compliment, to threaten than thank. It’s a tendency I prefer to lean against. That’s why I offer positive feedback to folks who extend themselves on my behalf. Grocery store, car dealership, movie theater, you name it. It’s marvelous how a face will brighten in response to a simple, “Thank you for your kindness.”

The reaction I enjoy most is the face of uncertainty that shifts to realization and softens with a smile. That’s what happens every time I walk up to a police officer, one not engaged in a crisis. I reach out and shake their hand as I say nine words that I pray speak thousands from my heart to theirs, “Thank you for wearing The Blue. I appreciate you.”

It’s in that same sense of gratitude that I offer this article about Officer Roland Russell and his Department who surrounded one family’s Christmas tree with gifts. These officers went above and beyond duty, and sharing their story is my way of thanking them.

How about you? Are you grateful there are men and women dedicated to come when you’re in an accident? Keep your neighborhood safe? Respond to your 911 call? If so, let me suggest two ways to express yourself:

1) Every chance you get, shake the hand of someone wearing The Blue and deliver your gratitude. Feel free to use my nine words or a few of your own. Then come over here and leave a comment, maybe include place and date.

2) When you come across an uplifting story about those who wear The Blue, share the link here. That way the rest of us can join you and stir a wave of appreciation.

And who knows, as we rally together, maybe prizes will need to enter the picture. Let’s see how it goes as we practice treating others the way we would like to be treated.

How do you express gratitude in your daily life?
Share the reactions you get in Comments.

Stepping out in expectation,

Sandra
