How can we have a positive impact for peace and order in our culture? One simple way is to honor those who give their lives to that purpose by wearing The Blue, past and present. A unique opportunity appears this year on May 13, 2018.

In 1962, May 15 became Peace Officers Memorial Day by presidential proclamation to honor those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. The week that includes that date is known as National Police Week. Departments throughout the United States and the world attend this special event.

May 1 starts the celebration with the Annual Blue Mass and numerous activities follow. On May 14 vendors will gather at a tent city set up at RFK Stadium for three days of local activities. These celebrations are echoed in various states across the country. Google your state police week to find out what’s happening in your area.

Nothing official going on? That’s okay. You can make your own celebration. Express your grief over officers who’ve lost their lives by honoring those who continue to serve. Here are a few ideas to inspire you for what you might take by your local police station.

  • A card with words of sympathy and appreciation.
  • A bouquet of flowers from your yard with a note.
  • A batch of cookies or brownies with a word of thanks.
  • A child’s drawing with a few kind words.
  • A box of donuts with Thank you scrawled on the cover.

Wherever you live, this would be a great week to pick up the original Year of the Blue suggestion to look a law enforcement officer in the eye, shake their hand, and deliver a hearty thank you.

Does all that sounds like too much for your busy days, but you still want to make your ___ known? That’s okay. You can make still contact the principal organizers and send them an email. Donations would likely be welcome too.

Leave a comment about your plans and let us know how they turn out.
