Gentle sunlight bathed the oval table with its floral centerpiece and turquoise cloth. Sherry finished reading her devotional, and closed her eyes in prayer. She shared her circumstances and thoughts with confidence. But when Holy Spirit spoke to her heart, her head bowed low. A verse came to mind. She flipped the pages of her Bible, desperate to read the words again though she knew them.

If we confess our sins, He [God] is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.1 John 1:9*

Her hands wrung her fingers white. “I confess, LORD. I used to think a person or people, a program or a process would get me what I needed, would take me where I wanted to go. Of all the arrogance, Father.” Tears fell. “Please forgive me for the sin of elevating any person, place, thing or idea to Your rightful place.” A sob escaped. ” You know my fallen frame, everything I need and who I’m supposed to be. I trust You and You Alone to take me where I’m supposed to go.”

Shame, accusations, and consequences hit her like ten-pound beanbags. Another verse popped up, and she raced to the reference.

Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.Romans 8:1-2

Her head tipped heavenward as her shoulders touched the back of the wooden chair. The holy promise poured over and through her soul, quelling every threat. “Thank You for Your mercy, LORD. Thank You.

What burden are you carrying needlessly?
You can shed them and enjoy unspeakable freedom the same way Sherry did.
